10 Reasons why hosts should replace backups with BountySite

Here are 10 reasons why Hosting providers should switch their website backups to BountySite backup and add a layer of security to hosting infrastructure.

1 - Incremental backups

Hosting providers mostly have a weekly full backup with a daily incremental backup. The problem with this strategy is that the full backup is resource intensive, no matter how optimal the backup software is. And during server backup, hosting performance is impacted causing increase in website response times.

BountySite backup performs full backup for the first time only and subsequently only runs incremental backups. Detecting files for incremental backup is also optimized by simply traversing Inode table with no I/O impact. Added to all this BountySite also provides a way to throttle concurrent backup requests per IP Address to further reduce any impact during peak traffic hours. Overall, BountySite backup has no impact on hosting server for backups throughout the day.

BountySite storage also keeps only delta change in incremental data, which means only the file difference(file diff) is the increase in storage and not the whole file. Most backup software will download and save the whole file, if it was modified. The disk addition is of the whole new file.

2 - Website Time Machine

Hosting provider backup retention is mostly 7/14 days. Incase a website was infected for more than 14 days, hosting provider has no way to provide site owner with pristine version of the website.

BountySite maintains revision control of websites, which means unlimited restore points for a website. This guarantees pristine version restores. Site owners can also traverse old snapshots and download individual files and also view change history and view changes for text files. BountySite provides immunity against ransomware by performing offsite backups.

3 - Offsite Security scanning

BountySite runs security scans on website backups to look for malwares and threats. Anti virus scanning is offloaded from hosting server, giving more resources to hosting server. This also allows to run intensive security scans without worrying about website response times.

BountySite also provides with blacklisting services to check if the website IP or email IP is listed in any spam databases.

4 - User managed backups

Hosting providers can delegate backup tasks to the site owners relieving the liability for backup. Restores can also be performed by site owners without needing to wait for support personal. In case of site infection, restoring a site is in site owner's hand and restores can be done instantly. Hosting providers sometimes miss backup failure notifications and it is too late to realize the same.

Also when it comes it to detecting site file changes, a site owner is in a better position to judge whether the change was unauthorized allowing site owner to quickly revert unauthorized changes. Hosting provider cannot tell if the change was malicious. This is very crucial in case of a new malware that cannot be detected with existing signature base.

5 - File Change Monitoring

The most important aspect of website backup is to find what files have been changed during the backup. BountySite backup gives site owners with the detail on what files have been added, modified and deleted. Site owner can also view file change difference on the modified files. BountySite keeps track of file changes since the first backup run on BountySite. Hosting provider backups don't offer the details about site file changes at all.

6 - Differential File Restore

BountySite performs differential restore while performing a restore. Before a restore, the website is backed up and then compared to the revision requested for restore. Only the changes are pushed to the website. This reduces hosting server I/O resources and also performs faster restores.

7 - Dormant Site Protection

Dormant site protection(Stable operating mode) is an unique feature by BountySite. In most cases the sites which are not updated are the ones attacked frequently. BountySite helps in auto reverting file changes automatically. This gives site owners more time to look into their site and take action(upgrade site). This feature is integrated into BountySite backup and a very useful service.

8 - Fast backup / restore

We have already covered incremental backups and differential restores which help in faster operations. BountySite storage nodes are flexible and can be placed anywhere in the internet. BountySite storage nodes communicate with the control panel over REST API. This helps in keeping storage node near the hosting server, giving faster backup/restore speeds. Backups and restores can be done within a minute.

9 - Instant Backup on file change

BountySite provides with Inotify plugin for linux hosting servers running cpanel. Inotify (inode notify) is a Linux kernel subsystem that acts to extend filesystems to notice changes to the filesystem, and report those changes to applications. With BountySite plugin, site file changes are instantly recorded and initiates a backup. This helps in backing up site file changes almost immediately. Since the backup process is light weight anyway, it has no impact on hosting server.

10 - Disaster Recovery Automation

BountySite provides with the automation needed to restore website from backup with a simple click. The DNS records will have to be changed though. BountySite provides this feature for Hosting Provider to mitigate unexpected disasters. The process of switch over can also be automated on a case to case basis.
